Elon Musk Wants to Auction Usernames to Increase Revenue for Twitter!

Elon Musk reportedly wants Twitter to delete inactive accounts and auction off the usernames. Two engineers with firsthand knowledge of the plan told the New York Times that the company has been discussing selling user names since at least December. Engineers have talked about holding online auctions for user names, which are the words, numbers or strings of characters that come after the @ sign and are used to identify accounts on the platform.”

Elon Musk Wants To Auction Usernames To Increase Revenue For Twitter!

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and CEO of SpaceX, is definitely not your typical Silicon Valley executive. His experience as the founder of PayPal set him apart from other tech CEOs, as he recognized that your online identity could be just as valuable as a credit card number. Now he wants to auction off usernames on Twitter to help increase revenue for Twitter.

Elon Musk believes that if Twitter is going to increase its revenue, it needs to crack down on inactive users and give each one of their usernames a fair shot at being used again.

He thinks Twitter can use a little help. The Tesla founder says the social network shouldn’t worry about losing its user names because no one wants to have their username taken away from them. In fact, Musk thinks Twitter could even make money from user names, describing the process as similar to being a guest at a hotel or Airbnb listing. Musk made the remarks during an interview with Rolling Stone, but explained that he has been thinking about this very strategy since December 2017.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, also revealed in a tweet earlier today that he’s on the verge of adding “revolutionary auctions” to his company’s customer service display. These auctions will allow users to sell their Twitter usernames for a small fee – however, since users won’t have access to their username after the auction ends, they’ll have to update their account information with the new owner.  Musk also stated that this is “99% guaranteed” to get pinned to the top of Twitter users’ feeds.
